As well as teaching children effective phonics we actively teach and promote reading for pleasure across the curriculum.

Across the school, all children have access to high quality age appropriate texts. 

Right from our youngest children in nursery children share books and listen to adults read daily, this progresses to individual reading with the teacher in reception in preparation for whole class reading  through the English Mastery programme which begins in Year 2, when the children are ready and have graduated from the RWI programme.

Children on the RWI programme are matched with an appropriate reading book that encourages them to practise decoding and understanding. They take a book home to read which mirrors the book shared in their group to increase confidence. Additionally, all chidlren take home an additional reading for pleasure book to enjoy with  their family. This will be a book chosen by the child to meet their interests or to reflect the current area of learning in the classroom.

All children are also encouraged to choose books from class book corners to share at home with parents. Book corners have been developed in line with guidance from Ruth Miskin ( RWI) so that favourite fives are on display and multiple copies of the same texts are available to encourage informal book talk between pupils.

We have recently introduced talk though stories across school and the books shared in these sessions have been carefully selected to be age appropriate texts that children will enjoy accessing at home to read for pleasure. 

Please remember to return your books once you have shared the text so that others can enjoy them too.
